Journal 2 Bethany Swan

My name is Bethany and Bobbi is my twin sister. We just got an eight week old puppy named Zoey. We are moving from our home that we have lived in for 17 years and it is becoming very stressful. We will be moving into an apartment which is a little frightening and exciting, because Bobbi and I are going to be living by ourselves! I am currently a Biology major and have to take a lot of chemistry and math classes. I work at Banana Republic on weekends. Also before I came back for spring semester I was in Maui with my boyfriend Jeffrey!
I found the concept of Scansion the most helpful. It is also known as scanning, meaning you can scan the poem to analyze the poems meter. "Although scansion the process of counting the number of stressed and unstressed syllables and analyzing their patterns is a decidedly inexact science, it nevertheless brings some order and system to the language of poetry."(pg. 28)

Metaphor Poems In-Class Exercise results. That was fun

Tuscararus, Ohio, 2017: The Sound Of Your Voice Is Like. . .

A shattering vase once an family heirloom
screaming for it's first meal a baby raccoon

The sound of my Peace, my serenity
A six year old in the talent show who thinks she can sing.

A Walts in the field
Gravel on my feet

The harsh quill of a cactus
A bee sting

Sparta, Ohio 1919: The Sound Of Your Voice Is Like

The champagne cork popping free,
Sweet melody of birds at the crack of dawn,
Cold flip-side of the pillow.

The first wave of thunder
                                           in a storm
ripping pages from a textbook.
Grabbing a handful of screws.

by Nikki and Briana

Calexico, California 2006: The Sound Of Your Voice Is Like

The sound of your voice is like
the deep rumble of thunder before the rain.
The current that careens through the shallows.

A cry too indistinct to trace.
The cackling of a bandit's fireplace.
The whisper of the spring wind.
The blare of a trumpet on Judgement Day.

Chattanooga, Tennessee 140 B.C.: The Sound Of Your Voice Is Like

The sound of your voice is like
Rain falling on a metal roof

The plow hitting the earth ready to plant new life.

A basketball going perfectly through the net.
The popping of popcorn at a circus.
A piece of music written by Francis Chopin.

Journal Two from Hayley McCoy

Hello! I am Hayley McCoy and I am 19 years old, I grew up in Bucyrus Ohio and attended Wynford Highschool. I have spent most of my life playing sports, doing art, and listening to music. I also enjoy watching shows and movies in my free time. I love sports and in highschool I played a combinations of track, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and golf throughout the years. My favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer and one of my life goals is to write and illustrate a children's book.

The advice that has been most helpful to me so far comes from the Beliefs about the teaching of writing section. "Everyone has the capacity to write, writing can be taught, and teachers can help students become better writer" (2) I used to believe that I was an awful writer and that writing was a gift more than a skill that you can learn and this has given me more hope for completely my dream of writing a children's book someday in the future. I took this class to try to improve my creative writing skills and seeing this section really helped my confidence in improving my skills.

Journal Two from Tricia

Hello, I'm Tricia, and I'm from Waverly, Ohio (which I'm sure none of you have heard of) and currently live in London, Ohio. I'm a super senior though this is my first semester at OSUM. I have a Bachelor of Science in psychology which I received from OSU main campus and am back for an undergrad English degree because it will only take two semesters. I plan to apply to law school for 2019; I'm not sure where I am applying to yet. Currently, I work the midnight shift (11-4ish am) at FedEx in Grove City. As far as actually exciting things, I'm getting a cat (maybe two) within the next week!

This is my brother, sister, and me in Washington D.C. last year.

What I have found most helpful from the textbook so far is the advice from the very beginning of the chapter about how to begin writing poems, and the reassurance that the entirety of the poem does not need to be and probably should not be known when first writing it. As the textbook puts it, "A poem that's overdetermined from the start [...]will probably arrive dead on the page." This has been helpful because I have found the poem-writing process overwhelming, and the knowledge that I don't have to have it figured out from the beginning has made it a little easier.

Ash's (actual) Journal #2

hello y'all, its ash. I know, don't get too excited, you have all semester with the world's finest Soul-Eater. I hail from many a place, and I don't like to put roots down, so take advantage of this golden opportunity and bask in my greatness. After four years of service for this Land of the Free I have returned to which I had previously lived, before my Marine Corps days. Graduating from the ever luxurious Tri-Rivers (to which I take great pride) where I had learned how to fight fires. huge D&D player and content creator, which is responsible for where and how I develop my stories and characters. I would like to write a novel or a fantasy series, and hopefully (I have no doubt) Creative Writing can be the runway I can start my ascent into such a journey.

you got 1 good picture of me earlier, with Professor Lohre's take on my Journal one, but in case you were confused to how a koala got so good looking another picture is posted below.

This is from my best friend's wedding, that took a couple years ago. Prior to "Freedom Beard Ash".
The other was taken in the middle of Edinbugh, Scotland on a trip with my moma last summer.

Journal #2- About Bobbi

My full name is Bobbi Dallas Swan. As most of you know I have a twin sister in this class, Bethany, who I am a full two minutes older than. I was born in Columbus and have lived here my whole life. I graduated from Olentangy High School in 2017 and currently work at Roosters (a wings place) as a hostess/server. I love music, all kinds, and play the piano and violin myself. It's a kind of stress reliever for me. Soccer has and always will be my favorite sport. I've played since the age of 4-5 and still play today. I have a beautiful Golden Retriever named Gabe (named by Bethany) who is the center of my world. Skiing is something I enjoy doing in my free time and I am currently in the process of teaching myself how to snowboard. Lastly, traveling is a passion of time. I have been fortunate enough to have done lots of traveling in my short 19 years and don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

The advice that has been most helpful to me so far in my reading of Four Genres In Brief would be on page 10. There is a quote from John Keats that says "if poetry come not as naturally as the leaves to a tree, it had better not come at all." What has always been a trouble for me when writing is that I tend to try to think too hard about what I want to say instead of letting it flow naturally and then revising later. This advice has already helped me to write my last poem. I know not to try to force a poem out of me, but to write about what comes to mind, what comes naturally.

Journal Two from Megan

Hello, my name is Megan. I love the color blue which is why my hair is dyed that color. I am also part of the lgbtqa+ community and will continue to be to the grave. I  have four cats which have all been strays from outside and have been given the names Skit, Angel, Kitty, and Snow. I am majoring in Aerospace Engineering as well as Fine Arts with a focus of film. I was born in Texas but have been raised in Ohio since I was about 4 or 5. I plan on moving back to Texas at some point since I still have family there. I have done a lot of art related things such as photography, painting, drawing, working with clay, sewing, and etc.

From the textbook reading the most helpful parts are the 12 beliefs about the teaching of writing. These beliefs help to put into perspective the ideas behind writing and give a better understanding of how to even begin. Each part gives a new idea to think about and explains how it can fit into our own unique writing. The best one of these is number 3, writing is a process. "We start with an idea, or an image, or a phrase. We talk about it with friends, or we begin to make notes, or we simply jump in and start writing." People tend to forget just how much work goes into writing when they are reading another person's work or beginning with a new thought. Each step in the process is what makes the piece unique and their own.

Journal 4: Response to Creative Non-fiction from Bethany

Part of the chapter that stood out to me were the checklists. One question it asks "are the characters believable?" It explains th...
