Journal 4: Response to Creative Non-fiction from Bethany

Part of the chapter that stood out to me were the checklists. One question it asks "are the characters believable?" It explains that out characters should be real but also unique. They should have believable goals and emotions. The concept that helped me the most was "telling the truth." The section acknowledges that memories are rarely perfect, but searching through thoughts gives us ideas of what to write about. "Tell the truth," says Laurie Lynn Drummond, "even if it makes you wince." "Ironically, of course, the memories that make us the most uncomfortable are often the very ones that make the best subject matter for out essays."(Page 181). I completely agree with this. When I was trying to find a picture to describe and tell a story, the truth made me feel embarrassed. I thought to myself that I wasn't sure how much I wanted to share. Once I decided to tell a truthful story, I found that it was easy to write. I like the story, even with the truth.

My question is, how can I write myself into nonfiction without talking about myself and my feelings too much? I know my thoughts and feelings more than anyone else's in the scenario, so explaining things from my point seems more reliable.

When reading the "Liferower" I wondered what the story was really about. It starts with her simply working out. But then she switches to talking about her sister having children. Which is why I am free to come here to the Y and row my heart out three times a week." She states this in the third paragraph. She worries about having no one to take care of or take care of her. An aspect I notice she uses is personal connection and personal vulnerability. She tells her fears, her failed marriage and an abortion. It works because it creates the story and gives the reader empathy. She also applied the aspect of research in addition to personal expenditure.

Journal Four Sierra Hedges

Part One: 
 One thing that really made sense to me and stood out was actually early on in the chapter in the section called Telling The Truth. It talks about how in fiction, it's all about making up something good and something not-so-typical. However, non-fiction is more about telling the truth. In fact, when a nonfiction story is written, and the writer did not tell the truth, they can face criticism and may lose all credibility. My question being, how often does something like this happen and when it does happen, are the writer eventually able to bounce back from the bad reputation or is their career ruined? 
In reading about the dialogue that goes into nonfiction, I figured probably more often than not, this is where non-fiction writer would have downfalls. To me, it would be really easy to mix up what the speak may say and then, unless you are paraphrasing, your story is no longer fact because you may have misunderstood what the character said or not remember word-for-word what they said. My question about this is, should writer still be held accountable for being inaccurate if it was a minor mistake such as forgetting exactly what someone said? 

Part Two: 

In the story, The Liferower, the author uses a lot of great techniques that are talked about in this chapter. First off, I think she does a great job of creating a personal connection or quality of personal vulnerability because she talks about how fragile she is and how everyone in her family is very fragile. Right off the bat you get a sense of mortality from her.  

She also uses a few poetic techniques such as the phrases she uses. She finds ways to say things that are more romantic sounding than just "my heart doesn’t work right." For example, the first paragraph describes the little digital rower on the screen and compares it to her pace maker.  

She uses a lot of personal experience to enhance the quality of the story. She talks about a sister who passed away as a baby from her heart problems, and another sister who struggled through childbirth due to her heart issues. She has a father who has plastic stents in his heart that click when he breathes too fast or hard. This all makes the writing a little more real and scary to me.

Journal 4: Creative Nonfiction Response from Megan

Part 1:  Something that I noticed when reading this chapter was just how similar creative non-fiction is to fiction. An example of this is the 5 Rs of creative nonfiction. The first R,  real life, states "The foundation of good writing emerges from personal experience." While this is supposed to relate to creative nonfiction it relates to fiction as well. With fiction personal experiences can be shown with writing about particular scenes or subjects like writing a character in highschool or university while having a personal history to add to the scene. The second R reflection is used in fiction as well. While fiction might not reflect all of a writer's feelings it should still reflect some so readers get a sense of the author in their works. The third R, research, is important for creative non-fiction and fiction. While a fiction world may make some creatures up if it is using real items, people, or creatures the writer must do research as well to make sure their facts are in order. Reading and riting work for both as well. For fiction reading other's works can help with writing along with learning other styles. While fiction tends to not use real people riting is still important with showing the magic of the moment and characters.
The most important concept I came across from the reading to me was that the readers expect the writing to be the truth. While the piece is to be creative it is still non-fiction so it must be the true which is hard when relaying memories. This concept though is what truely makes a piece creative non-fiction because without the truth it is just another creative piece of fiction.
My question for this chapter is there a way to tell that someone is truely telling the truth in their writing?

Part 2: In the story, News of the Wilds, the author uses the creative fictional technique of flashbacks to tell not only what is happening with him and his daughter in that moment but also show what happened with his father before he passed.

Journal 4: Creative Nonfiction Response from Paul Winters


PART ONE: An aspect that I really picked up on about the creative nonfiction writing in my active reading was that the non fiction can be reflective and should be factual. I knew the factual aspect of it has to be there, but I didn’t realize how cathartic it could be. For me I wrote about where I used to work, and while it is factual, I didn’t realize how you can blend together your thoughts and feelings together into a more elaborate story than, yeah I worked there.

Real Life- “The foundation of good writing emerges from personal experience.”

While we can make fiction stories all day long, there is nothing more real than the stories that we have lived and it can be powerful to bring them to life in the creative nonfiction way.

Reflection- “Creative nonfiction should reflect a writer’s feelings and responses about a subject”

While writing the creative nonfiction exercise the reflection process of collecting feeling about and idea did come out to be very powerful for me.

Research- “I want to make myself knowledgeable enough to ask intelligent questions. If I can’t display at least a minimal understanding of the subject about which I am writing, I will lose the confidence and the support of the people who must provide access to the experience”

While I didn’t do any research for my piece because it was reflective and from personal experience I was happy to know that the genre of creative nonfiction can go beyond just personal experience and go into things we haven’t experienced yet, all we need to do is be knowledgeable and do our research.

QUESTION: how do people get away with passing things to be based on a true story but dramatizing everything?

PART TWO: In the short creative nonfiction “Joyas Voladoras” the use of research and personal experience is heavily used. While describing the hummingbirds from a research standpoint and also from personal observation. This helped me a lot to realize what can count as a standpoint of creative nonfiction.

ABC Story

Project Xerneas

A system of bright lights stands before him, their lights barely illuminating the darkened room. Blood drips briefly onto the keys as he paces in place, panic and sweat prominent on his face, even in the darkness. Computers and technologies were what he was good at, that’s why the rebels made him their leader, but this madness? Death was something he wasn’t used to, but he just watched Jas—
“Enough of that, Zane, back away from the computer.” 
Faintly, a voice filled with pure blood-lust fills his ear, like a mother’s loving whisper if her love was filled with hate. Gingerly, Zane turned himself around, a cold stone forming in his stomach as he saw the face behind him.
“Henry, you’re aliv-” 
Is all he managed to say, before he got hit across the face with the of a metal hand, the force causing him to fall to the floor. Just his hands hit the floor, sending pain throughout his arms, before he feels his shirt get grabbed, forcing him to get dragged through the air – his feet leaving the floor by the enormous, cyborg figure in front of him. Kicking his legs in front of him, he struggled to get out of Henry’s cold grasp, his breath coming out in pants. Loosening himself just a bit from the grasp, he takes the opportunity to strip himself of his shirt and fall to the floor, his pale skin feeling cold against the mechanical air in the room. Mechanical… the mechanical lights! No matter how distressed he had been, he shouldn’t have forgotten his original objective – the computer behind him and shutting down program Xerneas.
“Oh, please, do you really think I’ll let you do that?”
“Please, Henry, this was your dream too…!”
Quiet breaths filled the room, Henry pausing at this response… not wasting this opportunity, he drifted his hand closer to the keyboards of the computers – only a few more keystrokes left before he was finished. Rage filled Henry’s face as he saw this, quickly bringing his foot to knock him in the stomach, his lunch (the little he managed to eat) vomiting from his stomach onto the floor.
“Stop…”
“To let you put an end to Xerneas?! Uneducated rebels like you are the reason I’m like the way I am now, Zane!”
Very quietly, Zane once again dragged his hand closer to the keyboard, keeping his face to Henry, his former comrade, as he tried to distract him enough to finish what he needed to do.
“We didn’t know you were still alive, Henry! Xerneas was after us, and we didn’t have time to check after you got your head blasted open!”
“You didn’t care, you only wanted to keep your precious rebellion alive you so you play lead-“
Zane’s hand had finally reached the keyboard, his hand putting in the final strokes to put an end to Project Xerneas – Henry falling in a collapse of cyborg metal and flesh to the floor.

Journal Two, Kaylee McCormick

Hello guys, I'm a little late coming on to the blog. I'm sorry about that. However, hi, I'm Kaylee. I'm from Mansfield, Ohio, but traveled around Ohio a lot when I was younger. My mom was unstable and on drugs so we never stayed in a town for too long. I went to Liberty or River Valley from about first grade to 4th or 5th. I also don't remember a lot of my childhood, I guess a mental block or something, but I'm dealing with it. Up until the first to weeks of 2018, I was super depressed and really couldn't find hope or love in anything. I talked to my mom for the first time in six years and realized I didn't want to go down her path and realized that I wasn't going to give a damn and be myself. I work at a waiver home for MRDD (Mental Retardation Developmental Disabilities) men. There's four of them and it can be a pain, but I enjoy it a lot. Fun fact, I have 2 hedgehogs and would 10/10 recommend. Also, this past weekend my cousin, whose more like my brother, was taken to the ER and transported to Columbus. They found that he needed dialysis treatments so put a dialysis tube in his neck. The doctor said he'll need a kidney transplant in a month or 2 so if you don't see me in class or I'm late, it's because I'm getting tests done to see if I am a match to donate my kidney to him and I'll be helping his mother with his appointments, seeing as he'll need to go to Cbus 3 times a week for dialysis treatments once he's released. I've been keeping good and happy vibes for him and in live in general so. Alright, peace out.

Short Short Story for February 22nd Class by Nikki Wehner

I'm not feeling up to class again which is ironic because this is my favorite class this semester. Anyway, here is my short short story for today since I can't be there during the in-class discussions.

The room smells of antiseptic and it makes me want to scream.

            I am so very tired of this smell. My nostrils become drenched with it at least a couple times a month now. They’re trying to figure out what’s wrong with me – and that means being poked and prodded and questioned countless times.
            The rooms merge together. The fake smile has a permanent residency. You’re too polite not to keep faking it. Although every time you still ask yourself how you’re going to manage that fake-ass smile for even another second… but you do.

Every. Single. Time.

            Life is changing around me. This is an incorrect statement. I’m simply opening up to all the bullshit that was masked by my innocence. All of that is now gone in my world. I’m an adult. I’m dying. I’m weak. Yet – strong and focused better than ever. Why? I know what really matters around me because my life timer was brought better to my attention. Life’s really too short for bullshit and aging really puts that into perspective as an adult.
There’s no denying mortality anymore. I am reminded every single time I smell that awful antiseptic that is my hospital room again. My fake smile is up again. My fiancĂ© there with me being more supportive that I could have ever hoped for. I would be bored to death already. I am more bored than ever. I’m so tired of being here being poked and prodded and questioned again.

But here I am doing it again.

            There’s of course the exciting side to it. I love and fully appreciate science. I will, of course, continue to go through the visits to the hospital and those gross antiseptic-smelling rooms because I believe in the science coming through or improving with time.

But I’m not going to lie and say it’s not fucking awful because it really is exhausting. I’m dying. Dying is exhausting.

            Chronic pain is the worst. You’re alive but it hurts to even breathe deeply some days. No one believes there’s something wrong because it’s not always visible. The doubt is the most annoying. The pain is gnawing, throbbing, stabbing, and stinging… sometimes a mix.

            It’s amazing how the human body works at all considering how many complicated parts go into the body functioning but here we are. Walking, incredible, humans.  Here, the scientists are trying to play magician trying to scientifically find a starting point to comprehending the processes when they malfunction is magnificent. That’s why I don’t blame science for not knowing the cure to what I have yet. As much as I was going to the hospital, you’d assume that I would be getting some form of a treatment – wrong. The professionals don’t even know what’s wrong with me. That’s right – they don’t even have part A down to begin trying to treat me.


            So here I walk down the hall, smelling that antiseptic again, with what hope I have left.

The eighth chapter in The Triggering Town was very vivid as far as imagery goes. Multiple times, Hugo paints a vibrant mental image about Italy. "I came to one Italy in 1944 and another in 1963. Then 1963 Italy was filled with sparkling fountains, shiny little cars that honked and darted through the well-kept streets, energetic young men and beautiful, well-dressed young women, huge neon signs that said CIT and CAMPARI and CINZANO in bright blue or red or green." (Huge pg. 76. paragraph 2) These last two chapters are rich with mental paintings and song-like phrasing.

I was curious as to what the italicized words meant, being that I do not speak Italian, therefore, I looked up the meaning to a few. Campari is a fairly popular drink of choice. Cit means the city. Cinzano is also a popular drink but more importantly, the name of a smaller quiet town in Italy. Just a little bit of info on this.

To me, these last chapters were very much the general theme of this book. Hugo talks about how everyone needs a trigger to write, whether it be direct or indirect, a town or item, a person or group, etc. He wrote about his triggers which were always towns and specifically Italian towns that held a special place in his heart. While, I may not be capable of using a town to trigger my writing, this has taught me that your writing does not really have to have a deep dark meaning. It can literally be just be composition of your observations. I think sometimes, I try to hard to find a deeper meaning for something to write about, which can be heavy and strenuous to put into comprehensive words. I will strive for writing that floats on a whim rather than boils from within. While, as we learned, its great to risk a little sediment, I think it is also important to keep things approachable and light at times.

Triggering Town reflection - Bethany Swan journal 3




In the last two chapters, you are able to tell the book was coming to an end with the memoirs. The book contains a series of specific insights. Richard Hugo gives us a method on how to write poetry. By seeing how Hugo arrives at his conclusions, this method can be applied to numerous other instances. By reading how Richard Hugo determines what to write, the method he gives us can be used and applied to our own poetry.

‘Ci Vediamo’ is a memoir, written on returning to Italy, after fighting there in World War Two. Hugo tell the story on all of his memories and what he learned about himself there. He also walks us through his thought process, while writing poems based on specific events. He says, "Problems of how memory and the imagination modify and transform experience, problems of stances you might have to take or to drop to order language into a poem." He tells us at the beginning of the chapter, he would show us this throughout his stories.

In the final chapter, ‘How Poets Make a Living’ Hugo tells us about working in a factory. This chapter is mainly based on the story of the squatter and how that became the subject of one of his poems. He starts off by mentioning a question on the differences between business and university. "In some ways the university is a far more real world than business. So there are differences but I'm not sure they affect the writing of poems..." The last lines in the book are a great ending and is a great last point to his overall lesson.

One of the most impactful chapters in this book to me was chapter three: 'Assumptions'. In the first paragraph he states, "Often the weirder the better. Words love the ridiculous areas of our minds. But silly or solid, assumptions are necessary elements in a successful base of writing operations." Assumptions are the back-story to your poem. Its useful write down original thoughts, but you shouldn’t question them while you are writing. Get your thoughts down then decided if they need tweaked. In another important lesson, Hugo uses ‘The Triggering Town’ as a metaphor for personal obsessions and the subjects that cause you to write. I learned it is useful to know what they are so you can have ideas for subjects of poems.

Journal 3- The Triggering Town reflection- Bobbi Swan

Part One:
I found it very interesting that Hugo worked for thirteen years doing other things before he started teaching and working in academia. To me it seems as Hugo did a lot of different things in his 58 years. The last two chapters for sure were some of my favorites. Chapter 8 talked a lot about Italy, and I found it interesting how when Hugo describes visiting Italy again, he is slightly upset to see it is no longer, "brown and gray and lifeless." Hugo says on page 76, "I hate to admit it, but that was the Italy I wanted to find. I fell in love with a sad land, and I wanted it sad one more time." Also through chapter 8 I felt I really gained better insight on Hugo as a person, which I really enjoyed. Chapter 9 was also one of my favorites because it really brought the book to a great conclusion. The ending was powerful and left a meaningful message that will stick with me as I sure it will with many other readers. 


Part Two:
One of the biggest lessons I took away from The Triggering Town would be when writing a poem, "the initiating subject should trigger the imagination as well as the poem" as stated by Hugo on page 5. Hugo says how things that should have a poem written about them, are not the best things to write about because they have a bad habit of "wanting lots of things at the same time. And you provide those things at the expense of your imagination." This advice was helpful for me when writing some of my poems for class. By writing poems about things that do not have "moral or social obligations to feel or claim you feel certain ways" opens up your imagination and helps to not block creativity and imagination while writing.
Another lesson I took away from this book is talked about on page 17 when Hugo says, "If you write often, perhaps every day, you will stay in shape and will better be able to receive those good poems, which are finally a matter of luck, and get them down." This made a lot of sense to me when I read it. I thought of this as like you have to do if you play a sport. You practice, maybe everyday, in order to better your skills and grow as an athlete, or in this case a writer. How can one expect to get better at writing if they don't practice? Just from writing the five poems we did in class I can see the growth and improvement I have made as a writer being that my last poem is way better written than my first one.

Journal Three - Triggering Town - Tricia

In the last two chapters of The Triggering Town, I enjoyed the glimpse into Hugo's experiences and how this context offers more insight into his writing method. The experience he recounts that resonates the most with me is the period of time he spent in that field outside of Spinazzola in his "moment of surrender" during which he felt he would "sit [t]here forever and watch the grass bend in the wind and the war would end without me and I would not go home, ever"(84). In this passage, it becomes obvious how stressful his experience in Italy had been; his brain could no longer handle the pressure and more or less shut down. It's striking that even though it was a stress reaction, he regards the feeling as beautiful and believes that his poetic attempts to describe it come no where near doing it justice. Knowing the historical context of the experience--that Spinnazola had been on the Roman Road--puts another lens over the experience. Imagining how long people had been lying in the field or other fields in the area, watching others go by, and wondering if anyone else had had similar moments of surrender grants another sense to Hugo's experience that I don't have the words to describe. Of course, all of Hugo's experiences in Italy provide a greater understanding of his writing and deeply impacted him.

The first of my two biggest takeaways from the book is that "if you are not risking sentimentality, you  are not close to your inner self" (7). I think that this summarizes many other points throughout the book. The final two chapters and parts of several others are about Hugo's experiences, and he mentions repeatedly that it is his feelings about these things that inform his poetry. It is necessary for a poet to draw from their own experiences and use their feelings in writing. Though this may seem obvious, he recounts a young writing professor who thought writers didn't use their own experiences. Using personal feelings and experiences make writing real and relatable. The second of my takeaways is the tool of setting up arbitrary rules and assumptions for yourself. He mentions a rule he set up when he was young that if he liked a particular sound he wrote, he would "make a similar sound three to eight syllables later" (10). He also dedicates a chapter to assumptions as, he claims, they underlie the work of all writers. I think that actively developing assumptions could be a way to increase creativity and to ensure that there is never a  shortage of things to write about. After all, Hugo creates an entire chapter of just assumptions this way. It's important to not doubt these as "you have to be silly to write poems at all" (10).

Journal 3- James

Part 1- the last two chapters put me in the mindset of a book I read in high school about WW2 in the South Pacific called Goodbye, Darkness by William Manchester. That book chronicles the life of a man at war and his return back to the hill he spent most of his time fighting upon. Many similar emotions were evoked by both. In Manchester's book the question of what our purpose is is brought up quite often to the end and I feel like Hugo almost gives us that. Our purpose is to share as much as we can and hope that "we have been honest enough to scream back at the fates."

Part 2- I feel like this is one of my first introductions to setting poetry to a specific place or time to turn the work into more of a story. Do I know if this will work with my style of writing? No, but it's worth the try to find out (or at least I think so). It's also kind of helped my attitude towards literature itself and the importance of new works. No one can write the poem I could and I couldn't write the poem someone else could. Each of our efforts are unique and genuine and no one can ever take that from someone.

Journal 3: Triggering Town From Paul Winters

Coming in for a landing in the past two chapters was very solemn as the journey with Hugo was coming to and end and there is nothing like reading a book for the first time through and it is all new. Even though he is gone now, we are still getting to know him and that is what I love about books the fruit of them lives on.

The ending just rings on, and I have read it over and over. I love the last lines of books, because I know they have been so thought out and so I have decided to quote it.
     
        "Or if we never did it ourselves, that someone, derelict or poet, did it for us once in some euphonic way our inadequate capacity for love did not deny our hearing" Page 109.


Reading it can still give me the chills as we realize we are apart of something much bigger than ourselves and it becomes our responsibility to not only be the voice of our race and what is happening, but give a voice and a channel to those that don't even know they have a voice.

Something I wanted to know about Hugo is when he really started getting into his craft of poetry, and I found that he was 37 when he published his first book of poems after being in creative writing a Creative writing major at Washington state and going on to work for Boeing.

It was interesting to find that he was still open to his calling and he finally honed in on it. He also died when he was 58, when he was ripe.





Something I really took away from this book is the way Hugo would talk to us in his writing, it took me from not looking at myself at a poet at all to realizing it is a great technique to connect to the unseen emotions and can be done in a very beautiful way. It is something that will always stick with me because just as Hugo did we have to be open to our calling, and no matter what that may be poetry can be used to get out of us what our way of thinking may not be able to express.

Hayley Journal Three

The last two paragraphs in Richard Hugo's The Triggering Town were very interesting to me. In chapter 8, Ci Vediamo, I enjoyed hearing about the writers past and his visitation to his past. I have always been interested in the air force and I find it very interesting that he was a bombardier. I enjoyed the humor in the line "I was on the American side, but let me assure you the history books are right. We Won. If you had seen me bomb, you might have doubts."(75) Ci Vediamo translates to see you later and I thought it was a clever title because he is revisiting his past in Italy and with the last line in the chapter "I still wasn't sure why I'd come back, but I felt it must be the best reason in the world." (98) I enjoyed reading about things he did and the places he visited and hearing him comparing WW2 Italy to post WW2 Italy and seeing how different everything was and what all changed over the years. I liked hearing his stories from the past because they give you a better understanding of him as a person and I enjoy hearing people's experiences and hearing about places I have never been. My favorite part about chapter 9, How Poets Make a Living, was the story about the squatter and his wife. I thought it was a very good story and I felt bad for the people on both sides of the situation. I felt bad for the man because he was losing everything, he was losing his home, and I really liked his line "I only lost homes in my lifetime." (107) I felt bad for the company because they had to kick a man and his wife out of their homes and see it affect the man, especially in the letter that he wrote to him. I as well almost envied the squatter man like Hugo says on page 104 "And secretly, even to himself secretly, he admired, almost envied, the man because the man was not civilized, and I suppose basically no one wants to be civilized." There are many advantages to civilization but there are also disadvantages and that squatter man had freedom in his own way and he lived how he wanted and he was okay with it and he did not have to deal with society and the problems in it. I agree that it is better to be civilized but I still somewhat envy those who are not and those who do not live by societies rules and standards and do not hurt anyone else by doing so. When I was younger I would dream of living off the land and building a cabin in the woods and so did a lot of my friends, not being civilized can be very desirable but today it is not as possible to accomplish if it is even possible at all, I do not know. 

One of my biggest take aways from this book comes from the very first page of the first chapter "You'll never be a poet until you realize that everything I say today and this quarter is wrong. it may be right for me, but it is wrong for you. Every moment, I am, without wanting or trying to, telling you to write like me. But I hope you learn to write like you." (3) I really like this because you go through school and people teach you how to write and how to write like them but to be a great writer you need to learn how to write like yourself and how to write for yourself. You cannot try to be exactly like another writer, you can try to imitate their style but you cannot be them, you must be yourself and that is how you will succeed the most in your writings, even if it isn't anything bigger than personal satisfaction, being your own writer and having your own techniques and writing how you want will always be the best option. The other biggest take away from this book is from the second chapter "Once a spectator said, after Jack Nicklaus had chipped a shot in from a sand trap. "That's pretty lucky." Nicklaus is suppose to have replied, "Right. But I notice the more I practice, the luckier I get." (17)  I like this quote and it stuck with me because the more you practice at something and try the more likely something will turn out really good for you. I enjoy playing golf and this quote is very true, the more you practice the luckier you will get when you need it and I think this can relate to a lot of things in life and especially writing. You just have to keep trying and you cannot give up and maybe someday you will get a really lucky break or create something really amazing, even if it is just one thing, you can always be proud of that one great piece. 

Journal 3- The Triggering Town - Megan




    The last two chapters of Triggering Town, in my opinion, were the some of the best chapters. Chapter 8 seemed to really show a lot about Hugo as a person. The best line showing this is in the last paragraph of chapter 8, "Of all the Americans here during the war, you're the only one who ever returned." Chapter 9 builds really well off of chapter 8 while giving a reason why he writes. I'm glad that once the Admiral was forced out of the land that Hugo was able to tell about him in his poem. These two chapters have been my favorite through the reading.



    Two takeaways I had from the reading was that there is not one specific way to write and that the best way to get better at writing is to just write. Knowing that there are many different types of writers and that each person has a different style makes me feel more confident in my work. People can view writing differently and like different types. To better writing just by writing was something that I didn't understand at first but actually trying it seemed to work. The best part is that even with just writing snippets and not full poems or stories can still help improve writing. These lessons I plan on keeping and using with my future writing and work.

Journal Three Research Share for Hugo, from Mike

I tried to do a little research and internet work to give us a better sense of place and time for Richard Hugo's book.  I was struck by how important it was for him to go back to Italy, even 20 years later, to try to find places and memories that he could not escape.  In some ways the trip is a metaphor for writing.

"Records show that Spinazzola existed as far back as the third century B.C. This was Boeing Plant 2 and the company actually built it to look like a village from the air to keep it from getting bombed.

Of All Ways to Be
James Fisher

Thin hair tousles in the wind.
       It's owner seemingly just as frail.
Her body immobile as if pinned
       And her legs bent, shown in gruesome detail.

How futile her efforts must have felt,
       Crawling through the tall, dying grass.
So the young girl took to the ground and knelt
        But in a way you knew it'd never come to pass.

"Who left her there?" you ask yourself.
        Pondering the distance and longing of her look.
The house is her safety set on a too-high shelf.
        What more could they have took?

She will wait indefinitely,

Hello! My name is Nicole Wehner, but you all can call me Nikki. This is my fifth year in college and I am a forensic Biology major. I switched from business, and I would like to be a forensic science analyst when I graduate and begin my big career. For now, I live on my own with my fiancé Carlos, work online from home, and take each day as it comes, and enjoy the good and bad always. I take pride in enjoying the little things and going with the flow.
I recently was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, lupus. If I am not on campus, the likely cause is my health. I do not seem sick most of the time because my disease is not always on the surface, but I have learned to live with it and take pride in being as optimistic as possible in my life every day. Nothing is going to stop me.
I am a pretty open book if anyone ever has anything to ask! I don’t really hide much and usually fall into the awkward category a lot of the time. I am also very clumsy and laugh at myself often.

Journal 2 Bethany Swan



My name is Bethany and Bobbi is my twin sister. We just got an eight week old puppy named Zoey. We are moving from our home that we have lived in for 17 years and it is becoming very stressful. We will be moving into an apartment which is a little frightening and exciting, because Bobbi and I are going to be living by ourselves! I am currently a Biology major and have to take a lot of chemistry and math classes. I work at Banana Republic on weekends. Also before I came back for spring semester I was in Maui with my boyfriend Jeffrey!
I found the concept of Scansion the most helpful. It is also known as scanning, meaning you can scan the poem to analyze the poems meter. "Although scansion the process of counting the number of stressed and unstressed syllables and analyzing their patterns is a decidedly inexact science, it nevertheless brings some order and system to the language of poetry."(pg. 28)

Journal Two from Hayley McCoy

Hello! I am Hayley McCoy and I am 19 years old, I grew up in Bucyrus Ohio and attended Wynford Highschool. I have spent most of my life playing sports, doing art, and listening to music. I also enjoy watching shows and movies in my free time. I love sports and in highschool I played a combinations of track, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and golf throughout the years. My favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer and one of my life goals is to write and illustrate a children's book.



The advice that has been most helpful to me so far comes from the Beliefs about the teaching of writing section. "Everyone has the capacity to write, writing can be taught, and teachers can help students become better writer" (2) I used to believe that I was an awful writer and that writing was a gift more than a skill that you can learn and this has given me more hope for completely my dream of writing a children's book someday in the future. I took this class to try to improve my creative writing skills and seeing this section really helped my confidence in improving my skills.
