Journal 2 Bethany Swan

My name is Bethany and Bobbi is my twin sister. We just got an eight week old puppy named Zoey. We are moving from our home that we have lived in for 17 years and it is becoming very stressful. We will be moving into an apartment which is a little frightening and exciting, because Bobbi and I are going to be living by ourselves! I am currently a Biology major and have to take a lot of chemistry and math classes. I work at Banana Republic on weekends. Also before I came back for spring semester I was in Maui with my boyfriend Jeffrey!
I found the concept of Scansion the most helpful. It is also known as scanning, meaning you can scan the poem to analyze the poems meter. "Although scansion the process of counting the number of stressed and unstressed syllables and analyzing their patterns is a decidedly inexact science, it nevertheless brings some order and system to the language of poetry."(pg. 28)

The harsh quill of a cactus
A bee sting

The champagne cork popping free,
Sweet melody of birds at the crack of dawn,
Cold flip-side of the pillow.

The first wave of thunder

ripping pages from a textbook.
Grabbing a handful of screws.

The whisper of the spring wind.
The blare of a trumpet on Judgement Day.

The popping of popcorn at a circus.
A piece of music written by Francis Chopin.

Journal Two from Hayley McCoy

Hello! I am Hayley McCoy and I am 19 years old, I grew up in Bucyrus Ohio and attended Wynford Highschool. I have spent most of my life playing sports, doing art, and listening to music. I also enjoy watching shows and movies in my free time. I love sports and in highschool I played a combinations of track, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and golf throughout the years. My favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer and one of my life goals is to write and illustrate a children's book.

The advice that has been most helpful to me so far comes from the Beliefs about the teaching of writing section. "Everyone has the capacity to write, writing can be taught, and teachers can help students become better writer" (2) I used to believe that I was an awful writer and that writing was a gift more than a skill that you can learn and this has given me more hope for completely my dream of writing a children's book someday in the future. I took this class to try to improve my creative writing skills and seeing this section really helped my confidence in improving my skills.

Journal Two from Tricia

Hello, I'm Tricia, and I'm from Waverly, Ohio (which I'm sure none of you have heard of) and currently live in London, Ohio. I'm a super senior though this is my first semester at OSUM. I have a Bachelor of Science in psychology which I received from OSU main campus and am back for an undergrad English degree because it will only take two semesters. I plan to apply to law school for 2019; I'm not sure where I am applying to yet. Currently, I work the midnight shift (11-4ish am) at FedEx in Grove City. As far as actually exciting things, I'm getting a cat (maybe two) within the next week!

This is my brother, sister, and me in Washington D.C. last year.

What I have found most helpful from the textbook so far is the advice from the very beginning of the chapter about how to begin writing poems, and the reassurance that the entirety of the poem does not need to be and probably should not be known when first writing it. As the textbook puts it, "A poem that's overdetermined from the start [...]will probably arrive dead on the page." This has been helpful because I have found the poem-writing process overwhelming, and the knowledge that I don't have to have it figured out from the beginning has made it a little easier.

Ash's (actual) Journal #2

hello y'all, its ash. I know, don't get too excited, you have all semester with the world's finest Soul-Eater. I hail from many a place, and I don't like to put roots down, so take advantage of this golden opportunity and bask in my greatness. After four years of service for this Land of the Free I have returned to which I had previously lived, before my Marine Corps days. Graduating from the ever luxurious Tri-Rivers (to which I take great pride) where I had learned how to fight fires. huge D&D player and content creator, which is responsible for where and how I develop my stories and characters. I would like to write a novel or a fantasy series, and hopefully (I have no doubt) Creative Writing can be the runway I can start my ascent into such a journey.

you got 1 good picture of me earlier, with Professor Lohre's take on my Journal one, but in case you were confused to how a koala got so good looking another picture is posted below.

This is from my best friend's wedding, that took a couple years ago. Prior to "Freedom Beard Ash".
The other was taken in the middle of Edinbugh, Scotland on a trip with my moma last summer.

Journal #2- About Bobbi

My full name is Bobbi Dallas Swan. As most of you know I have a twin sister in this class, Bethany, who I am a full two minutes older than. I was born in Columbus and have lived here my whole life. I graduated from Olentangy High School in 2017 and currently work at Roosters (a wings place) as a hostess/server. I love music, all kinds, and play the piano and violin myself. It's a kind of stress reliever for me. Soccer has and always will be my favorite sport. I've played since the age of 4-5 and still play today. I have a beautiful Golden Retriever named Gabe (named by Bethany) who is the center of my world. Skiing is something I enjoy doing in my free time and I am currently in the process of teaching myself how to snowboard. Lastly, traveling is a passion of time. I have been fortunate enough to have done lots of traveling in my short 19 years and don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

The advice that has been most helpful to me so far in my reading of Four Genres In Brief would be on page 10. There is a quote from John Keats that says "if poetry come not as naturally as the leaves to a tree, it had better not come at all." What has always been a trouble for me when writing is that I tend to try to think too hard about what I want to say instead of letting it flow naturally and then revising later. This advice has already helped me to write my last poem. I know not to try to force a poem out of me, but to write about what comes to mind, what comes naturally.

Journal Two from Megan

Hello, my name is Megan. I love the color blue which is why my hair is dyed that color. I am also part of the lgbtqa+ community and will continue to be to the grave. I  have four cats which have all been strays from outside and have been given the names Skit, Angel, Kitty, and Snow. I am majoring in Aerospace Engineering as well as Fine Arts with a focus of film. I was born in Texas but have been raised in Ohio since I was about 4 or 5. I plan on moving back to Texas at some point since I still have family there. I have done a lot of art related things such as photography, painting, drawing, working with clay, sewing, and etc.

From the textbook reading the most helpful parts are the 12 beliefs about the teaching of writing. These beliefs help to put into perspective the ideas behind writing and give a better understanding of how to even begin. Each part gives a new idea to think about and explains how it can fit into our own unique writing. The best one of these is number 3, writing is a process. "We start with an idea, or an image, or a phrase. We talk about it with friends, or we begin to make notes, or we simply jump in and start writing." People tend to forget just how much work goes into writing when they are reading another person's work or beginning with a new thought. Each step in the process is what makes the piece unique and their own.

Journal Two: From Paul Winters

I'm Paul Winters, 21, From Delaware, Ohio. I have grown up hunting and being outside a lot, school has always been switch up to being more inside than outside. A month after graduating high school, I was in a vehicle with some friends going to the Alum Creek beach for one of their birthday's. It was really the first time I ever let someone drive me, as I was always so paranoid. We ended up loosing control and flipping three times. I remember all time paused and I saw my entire life flash before my eyes. From that day on it really made think life is not owed to us. And everyday even without an event like that is a gift and a complete miracle. It is not that we have to get up, or we have to go to school. It is that we get to go to school and we get to life a life worth talking about. That in itself is a blessing to always be grateful for.

The thing that has stood out to me in our readings that has helped me the most is "People learn to write by writing" Pg. 3

While this seems so basic, and I knew it when it came to other areas of writing. Specifically poetry I thought I would not be able to write. It seemed more just like a gift, you either have it or you don't have it and I felt I didn't have it.

It is important to kick out our self limiting beliefs and know if we are going to be good at something we are going to have to work at it. To work at it means to actually do it, without being hard on ourselves or trying to come up with a false narrative as to why we can't do what we want to do. These are lies that will just make us sick.
July 2014 This is the scene of thee wreckage after the crash.

This is my friend Josh and me out fishing. Josh is in the Marines and has a special place in my heart not only as a dear friend but as a service member.

Journal Two from James

Hello everyone. I'm James. I'm a senior at North Union High School who lives just outside of Marion in the small town of Prospect. The love of my life is my cat Leia. I raised her from the time she was three days old, feeding her from a bottle, helping her pee, and essentially being her mother. I have the scars to prove it. I want to be a Neuroscientist and have not yet been accepted to a college for next year so my fingers are crossed. I write quite often and I'm eager to share my works with you all! Sadly this is me.

I enjoyed the comparison of free-verse poetry to "playing tennis without a net" (pg. 33) because it truly hits the nail on the head. The game is easier to play when there are less obstacles. In the case of tennis; a net and in the case of poetry: figurative language, meter, and rhyme. I like that free-verse isn't discouraged per-se but seen as a stepping stool into strong poetry. Once we learn the tools of the trade we can use them effectively to create something more poetic than possible for us before.

About Sierra

I am quite literally a small town girl, (population of 300) who grew up on the family farm of almost 250 goats, 7 horses, 44 poultry, and 48 rabbits. I am originally from Arizona however, I have been in Ohio for about 10 years now. My fun fact about myself if that I manager a Family Video store but my dream is to own and run my own Bridal shop. I currently work three jobs if you count babysitting about 25 hours per week a job. As I said, I work as a Family Video manager, I am a dress consultant for Unseen Elegance Bridal Boutique, and I babysit during 3rd shift hours. Yes, I am a very VERY busy person. I am a business major here at OSUM and i went to high school at Ridgemont where i graduated with my class of only 35 students. 35 is HUGE for my Ridgemont. My hobbies in school included 4-H on an international level, FFA, and Choir. This last October I married my best friend Dominic who is in the Army Reserve now after being active duty for about 3 years. I look forward to getting to now all of you through this class.

Journal 2 from Kass

My name is Kassie Pryor, to be formal Kassandra but no one calls me that unless they really need my attention. I am an early childhood education major, in my second semester here at OSUM. I am usually eating in this class since I come to this class from being in a classroom at River Valley, so if you don't remember my face, I'm the girl that is always eating something. I have a brother that is 16 years younger than I am, which was my fun fact. I'm 500000% a procrastinator, so you can catch me eating and doing my work half an hour before class in the room, almost daily. I don't really do much, I work and go to class... Pretty much it.Oh, okay.... If you ever feel like just looking, you can probably see my socks at any given time because bring 6 foot tall, none of my pants are long enough.😡

In the reading for Four Genres in Brief, I think the advice that has been the most helpful to me is writing is a process. I am very much someone who tries to make all of my papers perfection, especially while I was in high school. Since beginning my college courses I have let go of that a lot more to try and de- stress myself. Writing is a process and I had to accept that not everything I write is going to be perfection. Even if it was perfection to my standards that is not to mean it would be perfect to someone else. So I would definitely have to say that is what has been most helpful to me so far, to keep hearing that writing is a process.

Additionally, I hope to graduate from OSUM with honors research distinction. My aspirations in life is to become either an English professor or to become a writer in the gaming industry. As for a fact about myself, I was born in Sacile, Italy on an air force base (for the better or the worse, I do not have an Italian citizenship).
Here is a (horrid) photo of when I visited Chicago as part of a concert band trip in high school.

Welcome to the Blog, and Journal Two prompt. From Mike

Welcome students and fellow writers,

Hope you will enjoy the blog, and this is meant to give us another way to express our ideas and communicate with one another.

Today's goals are to become familar with the blog so we can use it well, and complete Journal Two here on the site.

My wife Irene and I in Florida last December.  Do you know the famous place where Ernest Hemingway did much of his writing? We went there, and ask me if you don't know!

JOURNAL TWO PROMPT

--For your first post, write a paragraph where you introduce yourself, tell us some things that help us know you more, and remind us of a fun fact about you.  Also, please post a simple photo of yourself, so we can always come back to this and associate your name with your face and introduction.  Again, the blog will just be for our class and I will adjust the privacy and search settings.
--In your next paragraph or paragraphs, respond to this:
Four Genres In Brief analysis:  From our textbook reading, which concept, term, or advice has been most helpful this far?  Why?  Explain.  Use at least one good direct quote from the chapter in your response.
--When you are finished, publish your post, and then read other posts on the blog and write Comments to two other people in the class.  Try to respond to something specific, or add to or connect to something that has been written.  Conversation is an art in itself, and work to add something to the conversation on the blog if you can.
Good luck, have fun, and just let me know when you need help!
